Citizen Advisory

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn citizens about a roofing scam being conducted in the area.

In two separate incidents, victims have been contacted at their homes by a man who says he noticed a problem with the roof. The suspect then asks if he could come into the home to discuss the repair. While in the house, the suspect asks the victim to go into a separate room and tap on the ceiling or wall. The suspect then leaves the house and drives away. Both victims immediately discovered items were taken from the home.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, 190 pounds, between 45-50 years old with dark hair. The suspect’s vehicle is a gray truck or van.

If an unsolicited person approaches your home, whether they are suggesting repairs or other work, the Sheriff’s Office offers the following advice:

• Do not let strangers into your home.

• Never agree to repairs on the spot. Ask for a written estimate or contract.

• Get as much information as possible, including a name and vehicle tag number.

• Never pay in cash.

• If you think you home is in need of repairs, contact a local, reputable company and get at least three written estimates.

To report suspicious activity, call the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number, (941) 316-1201.
